DSI’s eCommerce Clients Ready for Christmas Rush.
December 1, 2005 (Cork, Ireland)—As online stores worldwide gear up for another record breaking December, it’s not just the retailers themselves that begin to feel the pressure. With Christmas 2005 expected to be a bumper season for online retail, increasingly retailers are looking to outsource part or all of the development of their online stores to independent companies with specialist eCommerce skills. UK retail consultants IMRG predict 24 million British shoppers will spend £5 billion online this Christmas, an average of £208 each. In the US, the situation is similar with comScore networks estimating that over $19 billion will be spent online in November and December, a 24% year-over-year increase. For most online retailers, the holiday season starts in October with the imposition of the annual code-freeze. Website changes are minimized during the critical Q4 quarter as online retailers focus on performance and stability. “In DSI’s experience, holiday traffic to online retailers can increase by anything from 300% to 30,000%”, explains John Murphy, Director of Operations at DeCare Systems Ireland (DSI), “it can be a worrying time for online retailers and there is no room for error in this business.”
This December DSI expects the number of visitors to its supported sites to exceed 20 million for the first time. With such high traffic volumes, it is vital that the eCommerce infrastructure, both hardware and software, is as efficient as possible. Delays in presenting data to the would-be online consumer can result in high shopping-cart abandon rates and a loss of potential revenue. The main focus during this period becomes ensuring that the eCommerce websites remain fully operational and can deliver the maximum amount of content to consumers in the shortest space of time. “Christmas can be a real eye opener,” explains John Murphy, “it’s when we get to see the quality of the software we’ve been developing all year.” As a leading developer of eBusiness systems, DSI has been at the forefront of developing class leading Java and .Net Internet solutions for over 6 years. “Our strength is in our technical excellence,” continued John Murphy, “our customers know that they have an unbeatable technology team supporting their businesses 7x24. Our Spring powered Java solutions as well as our Microsoft .Net solutions frequently surpass industry performance and stability benchmarks.” In a recent independent review , by Internet Retailer Magazine, of the top 400 US websites based on performance efficiency, the DSI developed and maintained, Avon.com eCommerce site was found to perform at over three times the benchmark average, placing it ahead of companies such as Dell, Apple, Barnes and Noble and Sony.
