DSI present at Enterprise Ireland Software Seminar in Cork

June 2, 2005 (Cork Ireland) DeCare Systems Ireland (DSI), were one of 3 Irish companies chosen to present their case study today at the Enterprise Ireland ‘Effective Software Development’ seminar hosted by IT@Cork. The overriding message at the seminar was that Irish software companies have considerable scope to increase their competitiveness and make significant cost savings by improving their engineering processes.

The conference heard keynote presentations from the internationally renowned experts Tom Gilb, recognised as the idea source for parts of the Agile and Extreme programming methods and Michael Cusumano, Sloan Management Review Distinguished Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management.

Irish company cases studies were also presented to give practical advice to Irish software companies on a range of software development processes. John Murphy, Head of Operations in DSI shared his company’s experience of Agile Software development methodologies with the audience. John's presentation was titled "The Role of Process - Building Better Software by Building Software Better" and focused on the company’s experience of software process transformation. 'Our observations are that many software development processes are overly bureaucratic. Indeed some practices encourage isolation and stifle developer innovation. In many cases, process is implemented as a means to protect the product from the developers', said John Murphy. 'DSI undertook an internal process re-tooling initiative to ensure that the organization exploited the true benefits of OO design and development', continued John Murphy. 'By adopting a more Agile approach to the business of writing software and by capitalizing on the benefits of open frameworks such as Spring, DSI has been able to achieve dramatic productivity improvements'.
